These vintage side / serving plates from the 1950s/early 1960s are so incredibly retro! Perfect to add to your set or use separately to serve cookies or other small nibblies. Made by Midwinter Stylecraft in an unusual square shape at the time which was rimless. It was dubbed "Fashion Shape" or "Fashion Tableware". They are both in the "Cassandra" pattern which was designed by Jessie Tait. Two different back-stamps but the same pattern. It could be that one is older than the other as the pattern continued through the 1950s/60s.
Excerpt from Pottery Histories, Histories of UK potters and pottery manufacturers © Mike Perry 2011:
"The Fashion shape, released in 1954, took the Midwinter look to another level. The shape fully embodied the organic modernism of the American designers. The flatware was now rimless - regarded as a bold step at the time – and the pots and bowls had free-flowing, fluid lines ... backstamps often refer to ‘Stylecraft Fashion tableware’ or ‘Stylecraft Fashion shape’, as a way of introducing what was a very bold shape to a conservative public."
Approximately 7 1/2 inches square.
They are in good condition. No cracks or chips. There are signs of wear to the graphic (as they are, after all, approximately 60 years old!). The pattern is a mix of light robin's egg blue and black. The blue on both plates is a little faded - probably from dishwasher use. They still look awesome but compared to others I've seen in mint condition - the fading is noticeable.
